How to apply the hdmi port?

How do I fix a broken HDMI port on an 80 gigabyte PlayStation 3?

  • Recently there was a storm where I live, and it seems that a lightning strike somehow took out the HDMI port on my PlayStation 3 system. In order to fix the problem I've tried: -Resetting the system by holding in the power sensor -Switching HDMI ports on my HDTV -Unplugging the system -Using a new HDMI cable -Plugging the PS3 into another HDTV with the HDMI cable. -Using a 2-In/1 Out HDMI Selector Switch -Going into the display setting on the PS3's XMB bar. -Using Option 3 under Safe Mode -Unplugging the television set I plugged in the red, white, and yellow AV cables, and they work fine. The PlayStation 3 even says that it detects an HDMI cable, but when it asks me if I would like to switch, I click "Yes" and switch to the HDMI1 setting on my television, I get a blue screen with the text, "No Signal!" I find it a bit odd that the lightning only damaged the HDMI port and nothing else on the system. I was surprised to find that the AV cables still worked, but not the HDMI port. So I was wondering if anyone knew of any schematics to open the PS3 to fix it, and if I needed to buy any chips, cards, circuit boards, etc to fix the problem. If push comes to shove I'll send it in to Sony, but I first want to know if there is anything I can do fix it myself.

  • Answer:

That is a very unfortunate twist of fate. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do besides having it sent in. The HDMI port needs to be fixed by a professional. However, if it's still under warranty and Sony can't fix it, they will send you an equivalent, refurbished (or new, their choice) system for free, otherwise you'll have to pay if it's out of warranty. So you can use the standard A/V or have it sent in. You should also back up your data. Repeat, back up your data.
