What does "derivative gameplay mean?

What do people mean when they defend first person shooter games for their gameplay?

  • so i asked a question about killzone 2. i said how i don't understand the masterpiece in killzone 2 other than its graphics i got a lot of people saying that the gameplay is great along with its graphics... the gameplay for any fps is shoot, reload, run, jump, shoot. so how is the gameplay of killzone 2 different from cod4? what other gameplay do you do other than shoot, reload, run jump, and shoot? seriously i'm not trying to look down on killzone 2. i just don't understand hype. like how halo 3 was hyped, yet it was boring. and gears 2 was hyped, yet it was the same thing as the first one. now killzone 2 is getting hyped, and i still don't understand it after playing a demo.

    well hype was made at first because of visuals and they don't really let down and the gameplay looks so tight which is another factor its campaign is what people really see as hype in it because its so epic from the start with that opening cinematic and multiplayer thats what the reviews are saying sets it apart so thats why its getting that hype

Well the guns are a lot different, and fire totally differently. I've never played two FPS's that have played the same, besides COD4 and WaW, the rest have been totally different. You can also revive people in Killzone 2, but that' not totally different. It's really realistic, unlike most games like Halo and stuff like that.

after playing the demo, while i am impressed with the graphics, i wish i could play the multiplayer. that apparently is what sets it apart from other fps games.
