Can an 80gb ps3 play ps2 games?

    If it's the 80gb model that is currently in stores and has no game included then no it can't play PS2 games, the 160gb model being sold right now also doesn't play PS2 games. The easiest way to tell if a PlayStation 3 model has backwards compatibility with PS2 games is check how many USB ports it has on the front. If there's two, it can't play PS2 games, if there's 4, it can at least play some PS2 games, but not every single one. The best models for backwards compatibility were the 20gb and 60gb models, they had over 95% compatibility with PS2 games due to those models having the PS2 Emotion Engine processor and PS2 graphics processor inside. The 80gb MotorStorm bundle and Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle PlayStation 3's had around 70-80% compatibility with PS2 games due to them lacking the PS2 Emotion Engine processor. Those two bundle models used emulation to simulate the PS2 processor which results in less compatibility with some games.

The only PS3 models that will play PS2 games are the 20GB and 60GB launch models released in 2006 and then there were two 80GB models bundled with Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4 released in 2007 that played PS2 games. The current 80GB and 160GB PS3 models WILL NOT PLAY PS2 GAMES !

no only the first models released at the beginning of the ps3 release are able to play. i have the 80gb (new)and the 60gb (old) and i have tried it does not work however you can play ps games. Weird idea by sony
