How long will sony take to repair my ps3?

• If I send my PS3 in for repair can I keep my HDD with me so Sony doesn't have to wipe it out? Also, how long does it take to repair after I ship it? If Sony doesn't let me keep it am I able to pop my HDD into my friend's PS3 (who has the same model) and back up my data? Does it work like that?

  Sony really doesn't care about the HDD data, they automatically erase it. If you don't include the HDD in the console, they will not repair it. You cannot insert it into another console, because each HDD and motherboard are uniquely synced. It'll automatically be reformatted if you try and install it into another console :( Bottom line, you will lose your data if you go with the Sony repair method. You pay too much and get poor service. I had my console serviced by a mail-in repair company, www.gophermods.com, they come highly related on the www.playstation.com forums and anyone that ever has a problem that they can't get fixed, they typically go there. It was only $70.00 They offer the repair for a flat rate, and give free return shipping on all their repairs. So it's not a bad deal and I'd imagine they are more experienced than any other shop around. Plus, you won't lose your HDD data, or the disc stuck inside your console.
