Is it a good idea to even play early PS3 titles at the moment?
-
So last week, while I was in Gamestop preordering FFXIII, I noticed that they had a copy of The Orange Box. I'd been meaning to get this game for some time, although I was a bit hesitant, as I'm trying to tighten my belt lately. But in the end I figured, what's twenty mor bucks, especially if I'm getting five games out of it? So I've been playing it over the past couple weeks, and obviously, since it doesn't have any trophies or anything, I didn't experience any errors with trophy synching. It's only when I noticed the weird clock error and my inability to sign into the PlayStation Network (even though I could still access the Playstation Store on my PSP) that I got concerned. So after doing some research on the recent news regarding this, I found out about Sony's comment advising users to not use their PS3's in order to avoid any loss of trophy data. So here's my question: Should all my trophy data be okay if I only play earlier titles like The Orange Box? Or should I try to avoid using my PS3 altogether?

My best advice would be not to use your PS3 until the 8001050f error was fixed by Sony, especially if you have an older / original PS3 just to be safe & protect your files, trophies etc. I had an older 60gb PS3 model & realized i still have my trophies. As a result, I just stopped playing & wait until the problem is solve in order to avoid losing any trophy or data. The error may affect games that featured achievements / trophies in them. It seemed the slim / newer models (120, 250 gb models) worked fine according to Sony. As of now, i found some links that explained why we get this error / updates from Sony in regarding to this problem: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/107/1072875p1.html http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/03/01/news-sony-provides-info-on-apolapyps3-don-t-turn-on-your-ps3.aspx http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/02/28/news-psn-maintenance-prevents-some-games-from-working.aspx http://twitter.com/sonyplaystation http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/03/latest-info-on-playstation-network-status/
I wouldn't turn it on or play with it until tomorrow. One lonely night without the PS3 is better than a catalog of long term errors... The choice is yours.
From Sony: As you may be aware, some customers have been unable to connect to the PlayStation Network today. This problem affects the models other than the new slim PS3. We believe we have identified that this problem is being caused by a bug in the clock functionality incorporated in the system. Errors include: * The date of the PS3 system may be re-set to Jan 1, 2000. * When the user tries to sign-in to the PlayStation Network, the following message appears on the screen; "An error has occurred. You have been signed out of PlayStation Network (8001050F)". * When the user tries to launch a game, the following error message appears on the screen and the trophy data may disappear; "Failed to install trophies. Please exit your game." * When the user tries to set the time and date of the system via the Internet, the following message appears on the screen; "The current date and time could not be obtained. (8001050F)" * Users are not able to playback certain rental video downloaded from the PlayStation Store before the expiration date. We hope to resolve this problem within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, if you have a model other than the new slim PS3, we advise that you do not use your PS3 system, as doing so may result in errors in some functionality, such as recording obtained trophies, and not being able to restore certain data. As mentioned above, Please be advised that the new slim PS3 is not affected with this error. We are doing our best to resolve the issue and do apologize for any inconvenience caused.
