How do i hook my ps3 to online through my laptop?

i have a laptop and i got a ps3, i bought a ethernet cord and i though u could just plug the cord into the ps3 and then into the laptop. i did and it failed searching for a ip address. i have vista firewall i think it is blocking it but idk. how do i hook the ps3 online?
