My ps3 says i need a perform the update how do i do that?

So i tried to sign up for playstation network and it said this (A system software update is required go to settings system and perform the update please help AND ANYONE WANNA PLAY PS3 WITH ME MY FRIENDS DONT HAVE PS3 :(
