PS3 HDD out of space and I want DLC?

Since PSN is back up, and they are offering free PS3 games to download, I was preparing to get some. But unfortunately I don't have enough space on my PS3. I don't have any music, photos, or videos on it and I don't want to delete games I've already bought. Is there a way that I can download the game to my external HD? The gross lack of space on the PS3 HD is depressing and disappointing.

I'm not sure if you could do that or not.. Have you thought about buying a second HD?
