Ps3 and psp connectivity?

i know that the psp and ps3 can hook up to each other and u can play the ps3 games on the psp. i wanted to know how that works before i buy my ps3. i mean do u have to leave ur ps3 on while it is connected to the psp or what. and can u watch movies through the psp when it is connected to the ps3 (if u have movies on ur ps3 hard drive). and how far away can u take the ps3 and psp until you lose connection. thanx
