What resolution would be best for me?

What is the best HD resolution for my Xbox?

I have an HDTV that goes to 1080p. I've heard that 1080p is the highest resolution but that's not the case with my Xbox. Okay so I have the Hdmi cable in and when I go to system settings on my Xbox I have 8 resolutions to pick it goes from 480p to 1080p and after those it goes 1024 x 768, 1280 x 786, 1360 x 786, and 1440 x 900 . Which one is the best resolution because when I have it set to 1360 x 786 it looks smoother than the rest of the options but people always say I should have it set to 1080p because that's the best one. And also which one is best for watching DvDs since the Xbox can upscale them.
