How do update the backwards compatibility on my Xbox 360?

Original xbox game compatibility on xbox 360..need assistance?

• I bought an original xbox game to be played on an xbox 360 console. (for the record, the xbox360 console is a friend's, and the game i bought for them is: metal gear solid 2:substance)..the friend doesnt know I bought this game for them, as it is a gift, but i have peroidic access to their xbox360 when they are away thru their roommate. from what ive read from microsoft's own xbox website, it says it requires a software update in order to play original xbox games on a 360 console. upon further reading, it says that one of the ways you can obtain this update is via xbox live, and it says further that if youre able to successfully connect to xbox live then you already have the required update...so if this is the case,..why wont this game play??

  Because not every original Xbox game is compatible with the 360. It was up to the developer to update their games to play on it and many either don't exist anymore or just never did it. Always check the backwards compatible list ( http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/how-to/play-original-games ) before you buy a game. Metal Gear 2 is not listed. You get the update by connecting to Live and starting a compatible game up.
