How do update the backwards compatibility on my Xbox 360?

Xbox 360 Update Problem?

• A while ago I bought my dad a second hand Xbox 360 which seemed to work fine. Recently he tried to connect to Xbox live but he got an update which he accepted but it got 80-90% of the way and just stopped (constant spinning circle) on applying update (even after left for an hour). this wasn’t a problem as he didn’t really need to go online so he ignored it but this problem has cropped up again as he recently bought Assassins Creed Revolution for his birthday but it needs the update to even play the game! We have tried a lot of ways to get the update to work like, using a wired connection, trying to update without the hard drive in, tried deleting the system cache and system updates (lb, rb thingy)even completely unplugging it from the internet and trying to update direct from the game disk but all comes to the same result. Does anyone have any ideas as I have spoken to Microsoft engineer on their online live text but after an hour and a half they said they would have to get a specialist to get back to me but they haven’t and it’s been 2 weeks! I could ring them but I expect I will get the standard we can take your Xbox back for a repair for £80! and we can't afford that! (being near Christmas and not being made of money) Also just a bit worried that he won't be able to play any games in the future!? So I don't know if anyone will be able to help but any input will be much appreciated.

  if the XBox is working fine itself then it seems as if you just need a new hard drive for it but it's not cheap new so see if they also have used ones at the same store that you got the XBox 360 from
