Why can't I play original xbox games on my xbox 360?
-
When I try to play the original xbox games an error message appears and says " The game couldn't start.Try downloading the game again." I think this is strange because I have the disc in the disc tray so I can't download it, and I have an official microsoft 250 GB hard drive in my xbox. And I know for a fact that the game can be read because it tells me what game is in they tray, for example I'll have Halo in the xbox and it will say "Play Halo: Combat Evolved." But I get the error message when I try to start playing. This happens with every original xbox game I have tried. (I have tried about 8 or 9 different games) Can someone please help me with this problem? I have the 4 GB xbox 360 slim model with an official Microsoft 250 GB xbox 360 hard drive installed.

Answer:
The xbox 360 has a more advanced graphics processor and CPU than the original xbox system did, meaning that original xbox games aren't compatable with the new hardware. To get around this, some games have an emulator written for them that allows the games to think they're running on the original hardware. Whenever you put in a game and it says an add-on is available for the game that needs to be downloaded, that's what it's downloading. Not all games have an emulator written for them so not all original game will work, and not all emulators work the way they're supposed to so it may not run anyway. I had Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee that would run but it had absulutely no sound when I ran it. Seeing that the developers want you to buy their new games rather than continue playing the old games I'm not surprised in the least that the emulators are buggy. The only thing I can recommend is going into the systems section and deleting the game from the station. This actually deletes the emulator that was downloaded which will allow you to download it again (and hopefully install correctly) when you start the game up. Seeing that Halo: Combat Evolved has just been rereleased in Xbox Live marketplace into an xbox 360 compatable anniversary edition I'd just swallow my pride and buy the new one instead of armwrestling the system to get the old one to work.

It has something to do with the Title Update/Patch, you need to clear your cache to delete the patch. This also happens to me a few hours ago, when I downloaded a corrupted Title Update from Xbuc for Skyrim, and it also say the same thing. Once you delete the update it should be fine, try re-downloading the patch or play the game without the patch.

Because the games that were made for the original Xbox are not the same as the ones for the 360. Not all the Xbox games are unplayable on the 360 though.
