How to fix overheating issue with Xbox 360?

• I'm having an overheating issue with my Xbox 360 (1st and 3rd LED lights lit up). The Xbox will start up and run at the dashboard forever (slight exaggeration), but once I put a game in, it will run for a couple minutes and kick off with the overheating code. I've taken the motherboard out, and re-applied thermal compound on the GPU and CPU units, but I'm still having the same issue. I was wondering what else the problem could be. Here are some other details: 1) I completely removed all of the thermal paste that was previously on the units 2) I did not apply too much compound, and I only applied compound to the units themselves. 3) I put the original X-clamps back on and they seemed like they were tight. 4) I suspended the power supply from a string to allow more air movement, and the Xbox itself is not in an enclosed space (it never was). 5) When I re-booted the machine after doing all of this, it did the same thing as before. It runs at the dashboard, but once the game goes in, it only runs for a couple minutes then kicks off. In addition to the core facts: It's a 2007 Xbox with no warranty, so I wasn't going to send it in to Microsoft and since I've tampered with it I can't anyway (please don't tell me to just send it in). I've never had any problems with it before. And finally, I realize that it's an old Xbox and I might just have to buy a new one, so please don't just say "buy a new one". I'd rather try to fix this one. It's cheaper and half the fun. Anyway, I apologize for the long message. Thanks.

  Well, I had the same xbox and problem. It would always freeze up in frame skips every hour and take forever to load everything. To keep it from overheating, keep it off of carpet-like surfaces. My solution is to buy a new one. I've done the same two weeks ago and this xbox runs smooth and no problem what-so-ever.
