How do I use an Xbox 360 controller on the PC?

So I have a Xbox 360 controller and I downloaded the wireless controller software from Microsoft and everything but when I plug in the Xbox controller the ring flashes and flashes but it doesn't work and I use the Charge kit thing and the battery is a chargeable one and I tried with two different controllers but they both had the same problem, I want to use the Xbox 360 controller to play Dues-Ex:Human Revolution on Steam I tried a bunch of stuff so if anyone can help me please tell me how to use the controller correctly.

You need the wireless gaming receiver to use a wireless controller on your computer. -No it's not basically wired. The kit cable can ONLY charge the battery it comes with. It does not turn the wireless controller into a wired one. Like I said, you need the wireless gaming receiver. I use my wireless controller on my computer all the time and it MUST have the receiver. Many have tried to use the wire, but it will not work for this.

To use on the pc You can plug a wired controller straight in, but with a wireless it will not work even using with the plug n play kit. You need to buy some sort of usb receiver for your pc, then you can use the wireless controller on pc.
