Am i allergic to hamsters?

Are hamster balls good for dwarf hamsters? I want the truth!?

  • I have an adorable Roborovskii dwarf hamster named Bolt. He is one of the best pets I've ever had and I would never want to hurt him. But lately, I've been hearing about how hamster balls are bad for hamsters and how they feel scared because they are in a tight space. According to many websites and my book on dwarf hamsters, because of their bad eye sight, hamsters use their whiskers to "see" everything around them. But when they are confined in the hamster ball, they can't use their whiskers. This worries me because it makes sense. I've also heard stories about hamsters legs getting caught in the little slits in the plastic and they had to have their leg amputated. But some websites say that this is a lie and that hamster balls make great exercise and let the hamsters see the world around them. I'm very confused and I want to know the truth...are hamster balls good for hamsters? I need to know as soon as possible! Thanks!

  • Answer:

in my opinion, they are great. they allow my hamsters to get more exercise and more freedom. i have 2 female chinese dwarf hamsters. they go in their balls every day and i have had them for 6 healthy years! they love it! but i don't use those big balls like most people, i use the mini balls that are meant for dwarf hamsters! so i think you should allow you hamster the freedom! just make sure if you live in a house with stairs, that the hamster is rolling around on the lowest possible floor, so they can't go rolling down any stairs and end up dieing or being seriously injured!

I prefer to never put a hamster in a ball since balls are dangerous. 1. There is not enough air circulation 2. Holes in the balls can get the feet stuck and hurt the hamster 3. No access to water if needed I would make a hamster playpen out of a storage bin so the hamster can have playtime, or he can have some place to mess around in without escaping whilst ur cleaning his cage.. I would also suggest you get him a playpen. It usually cost $12-15 where i live but it depends on your area.

Balls aren't hazardous to a hamster's health unless they are used improperly. It's true that most of a hamster's activity in the ball is due to fear and that hamsters have poor eyesight, but it's also true that it is good exercise for them. A good rule of thumb is to never leave a hamster in the ball for more than half an hour, because they may need water. If they stop rolling around in the ball, they are too tired, so you should take them out. Buy a ball that's the right size for your hamster, and his legs are less likely to get stuck. I can't say it won't happen, but when these things do occur, it's always a freak accident. I mostly just use hamster balls to keep my hamster in while cleaning her cage. The exercise aspect isn't necessary since I keep a wheel in her cage, and the whole "see the world around them" thing is a lie. Hamsters can't see much of anything that's not a few inches in front of their face, so they aren't going to see much inside a ball.

All of my hamsters use balls, and so long as they're supervised and looked after then there's no issue at all. When I fist got my hamsters I placed their balls in the cages with them, leaving the door part off for them to climb in and explore. Only when they were comfy with it did I close the lid, and they run all over the place in them these days. I always limit it to 20 minute sessions at the most, and never let them out of my sight, that way there's no danger of injury or dehydration. It's true that they can't see much, but putting them in a ball doesn't do a great deal to change that, they navigate more by scent and sound, not their whiskers. Whiskers are used to direct scent and to test the size of gaps and stuff, putting them in a ball doesn't really change that. And although initially fearful that's because of the new place and sounds, of you do what I did then it's much easier for them to adjust to being in the ball. If they're comfortable in it anyway then it makes little difference. Mine are actually more scared when I just let them out to play without the balls. Oh, and if you're using the right size ball there shouldn't be any chance of them injuring their legs like that. I've heard stories of people killing their hamster by leaving it in the ball and stuff, but that's negligent ownership, not the fault of the ball.

They are good for dwarf hamsters and for all hamsters. Hamsters have alot of energy and their cage isnt big enough for them to run around alot so if you put them in a ball they can run as much they want ! i recommend clear ones becuz the ones with color doesnt allow the hamster to see where its going since hamsters dont have good eyesight.
