Mysterious pet rat deaths all at once?

  • Something or someone killed my pet rats. They all died at once... I know one of them didn't have long to live anyways, but all three of them? That's not natural! I don't know what it could be, I asked everyone who could have done something wrong and I got nothing! I just don't understand... They were all in a laying position together as if sleeping in a heap. So I thought best not to wake them and quietly put some more food in there bowl. A few minutes later I noticed something wasn’t right so I took a closer look. I didn’t see them breathing and thought I must be seeing things and looked again, still not a single muscle moved. So I reached my hand in and poked them. They were stiff (Chills). They didn’t have any wounds. The first one had red foamy stuff coming out of her mouth. The second, the one who was going to die soon, she had a large bump on her chest area and an oozing bump on her foot (but that’s been there for months…). The third had red stuff coming out of her nose. So I put on some gloves and put them in three bags and into the trash. I bleached the cage and around the cage. Before I bleached it I got a sample of some red stuff coming out of the mouth of one and put it in a tiny plastic bag. The red stuff could be that one thing that they release when they are stressed or it could be blood, I don't know. Now I want to know if I can take the sample anywhere to get it tested and if there are any plausible reasons why you think they died. Please add as much detail as you can. To be honest I'm not that sad about their death but I would like to know why they died so I can protect my family from whatever killed them and to be a better rat owner in the future.     You shouldve taken the bodies to the vet to be autopsied. It does sound very odd. Do you live in a rabies free area?

my answer for you would be micoplasmic pneumonia. my 2 rats had it and died with in days of each other. they had red stuff coming out out their noses and mouths. and one has oozing bumps on her privates. they were bolth girls. i got them off Craigslist. (will never do that again!) it comes on really suddenly. it can last for days to months. it can kill slowly or fast. painfully or not. my vet confirmed this. it can be caused by the ammonia their feces produces, or aromatic wood shavings as bedding. rats have very sensitive respiratory tracts. hope this helped.

if u call a vet they might be able to do it or tell u where to go, but i don't know what it is but they all would of had the same thing

Could they have ingested something poisonous or toxic?? You probabaly won't ever know for sure- only way to know 100% is to get the bodies autopsied.
