Is it normal for guinea pigs to whine nonstop?

Is it normal for guinea pigs to be so scared?

  • I got my guinea pigs on Tuesday. I got them a large C&C cage and they seem to like their new home. I also got them a little plastic house that they can go in .. they are both females and have been staying in the plastic house a lot. They seem really scared and run when I try to pet them. I have been able to pick one of them up in a towel and hold it for about 15 minutes and pet it and it seems to like that.. it makes gentle little wheek sounds. I just wondered if it's normal for them to be so scared of even being petted?

Guinea pigs by nature are very skittish animals. I would say for the first month they may be skittish. Some guinea pigs take even longer to warm up to you. I know that happened with my guinea pig. But if you are patient guinea pigs are incredibly fun pets. Try different techniques like placing your guinea pig in a cuddle cup (can be purchased in most pet stores). Is the environment you are picking them up in too loud? Make sure the room is very silent. Also try petting them i n different places. Maybe your guinea pig hates it when you pet her head but loves to be tickled under her chin. Try different things! Good luck!

sure is my little girl jumps at the slightest noise or moment. the wheek wheek sounds are normal. hes just talking to you. be genital. they hurt when the bite!

guinea pigs are prey in the wild, so when they see something larger then them or isnt a guinea pig their first instinct is too run, since your guinea pigs are still new, give them time too adjust to you dont worry they will, i found with females they are alot more shy then the males, males have bigger personalities, you should like your doing a good job for now, but a few tips that might help you. when you go over to your guinea pigs, (if their cage is on the ground) sit next to their cage very slowly, and give them a treat like parsley or something, but reach your hand into the cage slowly, let them sniff your hand and stuff so they know its not a danger, giving them treats they will learn to trust you more, just sit with them and pet them as much as possible they will warm up to you.

This is 100% normal. In the wild, guinea pigs are prey animals. They are naturally skittish. What you have to do is spend time with them, get them used to you. Spend lots of time next to their cage. If it's in an open area of your house, the pigs will quickly get used to people walking around. And of course hold them heaps, especially early on.
