Is this a good weight for my Syrian Hamster?

Teddy Bear Hamster Has Gained Alot Of Weight?

  • I have a teddy bear hamster. im not sure if iits a male or a female seeing as i got it at petland a couple mnths back. and they put female and male in cages together, they didnt seperate them. so the teddy bear hamster known as topei has put on ALOT of weight can even fit into its wheel well hasta squeeze into it . topei is always in its igloo i got for it to sleep in. piles like bedding and food infront of the igloo entrance or whatever you want to call it. and im not sure on what could be wrong with my hamster. topei lives in her own home (cage just doesnt feel right saying) always has food, i dont over feed. lots of toys. clean fresh water daily. what could be the issue?? and how could i tell if it is male or female??

    Well i must tell you: YES they do gain alot of weight especially male syrians!! I had a fren which owned an over 100g syrian! Dont worry ur hammie is growing fine. Instead of food, syrians normally store bedding too! My fren's syrian likes to store bedding and stuck the bedding inside the cage's tunnel until it is full lol! Just saying that different hammie may have different kind of characteristics or even weird mood just like every human beings. But afterall, syrians are always sweet and tame. ; ) To determine whether if it is a male or a female, the easiest way is to check out whether it has noticeable testicles or not. If it has, it means it is a boy. p/s: You can actually see the male's testicals danggling near at their tail part. Good luck!

Maybe Topei is lonely because if he/she was in a cage with other hamsters then he/she would like a friend... And you might want to go to the vet for the gender thing... Also you may want to think about getting a plastic ball... That they can run around in out of the cage... Then maybe Topei could get some wait off... My Teddy Bear hamsters also have got fat since i've got them so it may just be them moving to a new and different enviroment...

Hamsters gain weight when they age.

Hamsters have a very noticeable genitalia when it comes to the males. You will visually be able to see a male hamsters testicals from behind. If you see no "bulges" at the back, Then you have a little girl. since your Hammie has gotten "chunky" get a larger size wheel for her, alot of the time i have noticed that the standard size wheels are to small for a syrian hamster to begin with. You could try putting her in a plastic ball and let her explore on her own, it may help her to lose weight. It's also a good idea to give her fresh foods every two or three days. Try fresh grains, sunflower seeds and nuts (not too many, please, as these are high in fat), alfalfa pellets, and fresh fruits and vegetables such as spinach, lettuce, carrots and apples. Be sure to clean up any leftover fresh food before it spoils.
