Is this normal for two female guinea pigs?
-
One guinea pig is very timid and the other is more dominant. I've had the dominant one for two years by herself because i wasn't allowed another one till now. Well I got a new huge cage when I got the second one and they get along amazingly outside of the cage. There is a little bit of mounting but the dominant one is purring like crazy. Well when they are inside the cage its a different story. The timid one claims the castle and won't let the dominant one go into the castle which she is used to being in the castle all the time. I was wondering if them have mild fights over the castle was normal. I've ordered a larger castle that will fit both of them and I think they'll both go in it when I get it but for the time being is it normal that there getting into little fights. I just got the new one 2 days ago. If this is normal how long do you think it'll take for them to stop irritating each other.

Answer:
Yes, this is pretty normal. Guinea pigs are not very good sharers. When you have more than one guinea pig, make sure you have two of everything. For example, hay dispensers, food bowls and houses/other shelters. If you have two of each, fights over sharing will not break out so often.

There always will be small squeals and fights when trying to figure out who's dominant. NEVER separate unless there is bloodshed. Make sure there are two hideys/igloos and one extra in the cage so there is peace, and they can get away from each other. The cage size COULD be the problem. How big is it? If it's under 2x4 feet it is too small for a pair of pigs. Look here for cage sizes and requirements. http://guineapigcages.com/

yes, This is normal. but easily solved. getting a bigger Castle wont solve anything, the new ggirl will just claim the whole space. leave the smaller castle in there too so they have one each. when keeping guineapigs together it is vital they have two of everything. two hay racks, food bowls, water bottles, toys or fights WILL break out. get two of everything and see how they get on.
