Should my rat Ryu have a friend :)?
-
I just got a new rat the other day I named him Ryu. I had done a lot of research on rats so I would be at the ready for when I finally got one. I learned that there was a lady across the street that raised rats so as I learned getting them from breeders was better then at a store I went ahead and asked if she had any available. At the time she had a mother rat about ready to give birth so I would have to wait roughly 5 weeks to get a rat when the mother starts to ween the baby's. Well the mother rat died before she could give birth and the lady that had them decided she was probably going to stop raising rats but she had a two month old male she was willing to give me for free, cage and all. The lady had said she held the rat least four times in a span of two months which is not near enough of holding time. Which leads me to believe she wasn't much of a good breeder. Regardless I plan to keep little Ryu and I'm doing my best to bond with him properly. The lady only had the one rat she was willing to give me and there are no breeders anywhere close to me so I would have to get him from the store. So really here are my questions: 1: Should I invest on getting a friend for him? 2: Is two months a good age to try and introduce a new rat? 3: Any other advice you can give for a verity of bonding methods Ryu and I greatly appreciate it :) 4: Any other advice in general you can think of to give me Ryu and I greatly appreciate it :)

Answer:
Yes get your rat a friend. Rats get lonely by themselves. And it's not true that male rats are any more aggressive toward each other than female rats.

Boy rats are generally more accepting to a new cage mate than girl rats, however it's better to try and introduce the new rat as soon as possible as rats will usually be more accepting to rats their own age. However, you may have problems with agression over teritory, they could fight and you would end up having to get one or both of them castrated. If you were to buy a new rat you would need a seperate cage to begin with. It's not fair to just stick the new rat in the cage, that could end up going VERY wrong. Maybe the lady in your street has a cage you could borrow for the introduction period? What you should place the two cages near each other for a few where the rats can see and smell one another, but not too close that the tails could go in the other cage. Then you should slowly introduce them outside the cage, with you supervising at all times. Make sure you can easily intervene if they start to fight. When the rats are more used to each other you should see how they react to living together. The cage should be thoroughly cleaned and rearranged, maybe with different toys so that Ryu doesn't get territorial over it being "his cage" Good luck
