My hamster's leg is very puffy, please help?

I can see my hamsters guts! HELP!?

  • On my dwarf's hamsters back leg, there is a massive open wound where i can see a gut like material. There is a severe loss of hair, and also what seems to be no skin. If i touch the wound, my hamster is not affected, and at the moment he does not seem to be experiencing pain. However i have noticed he is slowly losing his appetite, and sleeps for longer periods of time, and is very hard to wake up when he's asleep. I have searched online for an illness matching this description, however nothing has come even close to what is going on! Please help, i am seriously concerned about him. When i first noticed the wound, i took my hamster to the vets. The vet only squeezed round his hips whilst he was in his carrier cage, not even bothering to look at the wound, and stated that because of the hard skin, my hamster has mites. However as the wound has no skin and is not hard at all and is infact squishy, and there is no other symptoms of mites at all i believe there is something else! PLEASE HELP, I'M EXTREMELY WORRIED! X

  • Answer:

Vet. Vet. Vet. Vet. Vet. Again, and to a different vet if they don't look at the wound properly. TELL the vet to look at the wound if they don't. It's just common sense. Get your poor animal the treatment that it needs, as a responsible pet owner you should. It will be in pain with an injury like that.

Your hamster probably IS in pain. Animals deal with pain differently to us. They don't make a big fuss and say "oooh that hurts really bad" or whatever. They just go quiet and sleep more and don't eat much (which matches what you say). The hamster needs to see a decent vet as soon as possible. When you phone the vets surgery tell them what the problem is and ask for a vet that will have some idea what he/she is doing. At the very least the vet should give you some antibiotics incase the wound is/gets infected (which it probably will if it isn't already).

I would take him to a new vet or your neerest Hamster Rescue if possable they tind to have Vets on staff and will give you what you need I hope he gets better, this doesnt sound like mites at all sounds like he was nibbling on himself or got stuck funny in cage somehow Gve him Kiss's and try a little neosporn on it while you find a new vet I had this happen to the last Kitten Sadie had first time mom sat on him and busted him open on his front arm pit i thought i was going to have a 3 leged cat when i went into the vet but the vet gave me a 20 buckes worth of Neosporin littlerly ether way Josh has all his legs and a new home but I miss him

Sia

i would take him back to the vet of go to a better vet because that obviously hasn't worked you should demand some medication or procedure to help your hamster or perhaps the wound is just healing

take to vet

Is the wound bleeding? Maybe it is just taking some time to heal and your hamster is tired because of that... I would take him to the vets again though if I were you and express your concerns clearly to the vet. They are there to help you and you should tell them what you want looking at. Good luck and I hope your hamster is ok :) Maybe you could upload a picture of it as your profile pic so people can actually see what it looks like and you may then find someone who has experienced the same thing? :)
