Help with my newborn hamsters?

I want my roborovski hamsters to love me :'( HELP?

  • so my mum bought me two robos ( i wish i could choose) as a surprise..i thought all hamsters are friendly and lazy so i played with them on the first day not knowing that's bad..tried lifting them up n they fought like crazy..running here n there..i think i gave them the wrong first impression.i really care bout them..the second day i lay beside them for like 24 HOURS while i google everything possible about making them happy..until it was already night time..but, when i put my hand in, they BITE my fingers..n reflex always kicks in so i jerked no matter how i told myself not to..n it scared them..now they always hide from me..they hate me. only if they know how much i love them n how im trying to make them happy..n they dont eat carrots strawberries n even the peanut butter i gave them..i dont know what to do..help. n they sleep all the time..even at night..they just go to their comfort zones n close their eyes..help me please..i just want to cuddle a pet..but my mom wont let me because i used to be allergic to fur..but at last she agreed to hamsters..n i swore i wish she would've brought me to the pet store instead of a making a surprise..wudnt buy a robo just for the sake of watching because i have the tv for goodness sake...i want to cuddle my pets..but buying a new cage for a new hamster is expensive..n robos just dont share..please..help me

    You might be kind of out of luck. Robos are very "no touch" pets. They generally don't like to be held or petted. It seems like you know this, but it bears repeating. You can't change their nature, any more than you could make a fish live out of water. That doesn't mean that it's hopeless. First of all, you have to back WAY off. Don't bother them for a few days. You can talk to them softly and sit by their cage, but leave them pretty much alone. Once they get used to your presence, you can try putting your hand in the cage. Don't try to pet them or pick them up, just leave your hand in there. Once they get comfortable with that, you can try to hand-feed them. (Note: Hamsters shouldn't have peanut butter. It's too sticky, and it can gunk up their cheek pouches.) You have to take things VERY slowly. For Robos, it could take months. You may never be able to hold them, but they should at least get used to you. I understand your frustration. But keep in mind that it's not their fault your mom got them as a surprise. If you really love them, you should get some happiness out of giving them a good home, even if they aren't your perfect pet.

I used to have a roborovski hamster they are probably still scared of you try and interact with your hamsters every day. What I did was sit on the floor and have two or three people around the hamster including you so he or she can't get out let him wonder in the circle and scatter his toys and play with them they love it

Robos are ridiculously hyperactive, they are not usually a good type of hamster to be handled. Also, hamsters in general are quite unintelligent and usually do not show signs of affection. However if you just got them, they definitely have not been handled previously so you'll need to either scoop them up with their house and gently slide them into your hand, if you just grab them with your hand first they will think they are going to be eaten and try to escape. Or you can wear a winter glove or something they cant really bite through to get them used to handling but even with that you'll need to scoop them up from underneath and not just grab them. Also try to rustle the bedding before you try to handle them because they will be less likely to scare. Hamsters, robos especially, will not cuddle. If you wanted something to cuddle you shouldve gotten a rat or a cat or dog. They dont hate you, they actually dont have the capability to hate but they do remember being grabbed which is probably why you believe they hate you. when handling them, you'll need to wait until they calm down in your hand and slowly place your other hand on top of them and pet them all over their body like youre rolling a ball of dough. remember, they dont have depth perception so do it over the cage so if they jump you wont lose them. Youll have to do this method of handling first once a day and gradually doing it more often like 2 or 3 times a day until they become comfortable enough with you to just pick them up. you have to build trust with them and not just expect them to "love" you right away, they dont know the difference between you trying to love them or you trying to eat or harm them, they are very defensive creatures. also when you finally get to handle them, they will probably scrape the salt off of your hands with their teeth or tongue, this is not biting but if you dont remember this then you may scare them by freaking out. you should be able to avoid this by washing your hands before you hold them.
