Are the habitrail Ovo suite tubes to big for Dwarf hamsters?

Best cage for a Dwarf Hamster?

  • I used to own a beautiful Syrian hamster named Sarah, but some time ago she passed away. It was really really sad, and I miss her sooo much! :'( In a few months I will be getting a pair of russian dwarf hamsters, but I was wondering about the whole cage situation. I have a habitrail ovo home and a habitrail playground cage from my previous hamster, with tubes and everything, but things that concern me are the bars and the compartments. First of all, I have heard many stories about hamsters getting caught in the bars, or squeezing out of them and running loose in the house, should I be worried about this? I measured the bars, and I found that they are 1cm apart, so I'm not sure if this is sufficient. Secondly, The other problem is that there are different compartments in the cage so that it would be big enough... but I'm worried that my hamsters will claim territories and start fighting because of this, and I heard if I keep them in the same compartment, the space might be too small and crowded and they will start fighting. Is this true? Or should I be worried? I am considering a aquarium cage with a screen topper so they won't escape, and the cage will get good ventilation. Would this be a better idea than my current cage? Thanks in advance!

well i have never had dwarf hampsters but my brother and i both had one and they would always his at each other and fight it got so bad that they started to bleed from their fights so we had to buy seperate cages for them ..... not all hampsters are the same but from my experience they are pretty territorial my advice is two seperate cages i would avoid the plastic ones and use the ones that are wire and plastic bottom because one time both hampsters exscaped from their plastic cage a chewed through the wall they never escaped from the wire and the wire never hurt them hope i helped ! :) goodluck

Best would be a 20 gallon long tank with lid. I've actually just recently had a hamster that fell from a 2 level cage and broke her back. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would have gotten a single story glass terrarium for her.
