Guinea Pig Bladder Infection?

A "What Would You Do?" Question About A Guinea Pig with Bladder Stones?

  • My guinea pig has bladder stones. At least one, if not several, and very large in size. Very palpable in the bladder. The guinea pig is 8 years and 4 months old. He can have very slight difficulty walking due to pain and intermittent blood in urine. He is still eating and drinking fine. I can't afford surgery as it would cost 350$ and honestly he is already 2+years past the normal guinea pig lifespan. What would YOU do if this was your guinea pig: OPTION ONE: Take out payment plan for surgery even though he will not live much longer. Risk of surgery on an 8 yr old pig is risky in itself... plus the recovery and such... is it really worth it? OPTION TWO: Try to manage him the best I can... pain meds and such. OPTION THREE: Euthanize the little guy :<

  • Answer:

I honestly wouldn't want him to live in pain, i would have euthanized him. Especially because if he's on meds, he will still be in pain until they stop, and they will have side affects, which will keep him in pain.

Most likely 3, I would talk to vet about how possible it is to manage the pain. If it isn't too bad then go for 2. He lived a long life which is great but maybe now it is time to get a new friend.

I would choose option 2. 8 years is a long lifespan. Even though is is very old, still try your best to help keep him going.

the longest a guinea pig has lived for is 15 years, so its possible your little guy could have 7years left to live! honestly, 350 isnt that much at all for a surgery, here its 350 just for a xray! so consider it cheap. obviously he cannot live like this, i don't believe euthanizing him is quiet nessicary as there is ways around it. you could ethier put him on pain medication or surgery, keep in mind though if he just stays on pain killers, the bladder stone could eventually stop him completely from pooping and weeing, then you would have to euthanize him. think of it this way, we dont euthanize old people, so why should we do that to animals? take out a payment plan i would. if he dies during the surgery atleast its painless because he will be asleep, the meds will only mask the pain and it could eventually kill him anyway, i would go with the surgery.
