Guinea Pig Bladder Infection?

Help! Guinea Pig trouble!?

  • We have two guinea pigs around age 5. Our brown one named Rosey has been acting a little weird lately. We happen to think she's got some kind of a bladder infection as it seems when she pee's in her cage she pee's blood. I noticed as well she walks a little funny sometimes, and when she goes to pee she makes a painful sound and twitches a little. She sometimes curls into a ball when she does this as well. We don't have any type of guinea pig clinic around here and its too expensive to check out even if we were to find one. Does anyone have any idea's on what this is, or what we can do to help Rosey?

  • Answer:

yeah its prob something to do with her kidney or bladder. The only thing you can do is to take her to the vet. If you cant do that call the vet and ask what you should do but they will prob just say to bring her in.. Good Luck! =[

If you can get to the vet sooner this would be good. If she stops eating and/or drinking she needs to go to the animal ER immediately - this is life threatening. This sounds just like a bladder infection, UTI, or stones/sludge. They get all these easily. This is painful so the sooner she sees a dr the better. They will probably giver her Baytil ot Bactrim for antibiotic (my experiencfe, Baytril is better and a pain killer like Metacam. Do not let them give her any penicillin based drug. If this is a GP vet they will now this. They will also want to take an X-ray or two to see if their are stones, If there is stones the GP either needs surgery or to be put to sleep. Surgery can be expensive and dangeroous, so get the advice of the vet. If she has bladder sludge this is a precursor to stones. They will have suggestions how to deal with this. make sure your GP does not eat dark leafy greens, broccoli, or alfalfa hay. These are high in calcium and lead to this problem. They will not need a urine sample, but if they can get one without being invasive (like using a needle or catheter) they might do it to be sure.

This sounds serious, especially for a guinea pig! You need to take her/him to a vet, I am afraid for your guinea pig because mine just died. Some one might give you the wrong information and your guinea pig could end up like mine.

It sounds like a UTI (bladder infection) and trust me, I get them they are PAINFUL she NEEDS a vet, if she doesn't get one it's so cruel because I have to go to hospital when I get them. You shouldn't buy an animal if you don't have the money for vet care.. especially in sure pain. Guinea pigs don't need to always see a cavy vet, they can see a normal one too... She could die, bladder infections don't go away and can scar you inside.

hold on i have notes for this somewhere.... here! Bladder stone symptoms include high squeaking sounds when urinating, a much louder squeak and a lifting of the rump as it finishes, the stone can be felt at the opening of the urethra. it definitely has bladder stones. you NEED to go to the vet, or else it will get worse. theres nothing u can do about it, except going to the vet. even if it is expensive, would u rather let your precious baby die?
