Is this a good weight for my Syrian Hamster?

My hamster is old and lost a top tooth and half of his bottom tooth. He's losing weight very quickly! HELP! :(?

  • Just like the title says! My hamster is turning 3 in January and I know he is old. He lost his top tooth a while ago and nothing has grown back yet..... he chipped his bottom tooth as well. He is cracking open his seeds, (I check his cage everyday to see if he's doing that) and he is drinking water. But he is losing a lot of weight and also is sleeping a lot more during the night. (He sleeps all day as well) I know part of it is that he's old but he never used to be like this! And I'd also like to know if this means he's going to pass away soon?! :'( I just recently lost my bird due to her old age and it was very tough, If Bubbles (my winter white hamster) is showing signs of him seeing the light please tell me, so we can all (my family) mentally prepare for this. Thank you.

  • Answer:

well he has lost Weight because he can no longer eat with out his teeth.it well grow back if he get vitamins and food. try to feed with softer food not seed more like apple and grapes and lots of water then slowly add his normal food to get with back on his diet again.keep him eating is the main thing.

Anyway... get new vitamins, or start adding them to the water bottle if you don't have them already. They will strengthen your little hammie. I use Avitron Liquid Vitamin Supplement for Birds Mulitivitamin Formula Including Vitamin C. "birds: 2 drops per teaspoon (daily) 6 drops per tablespoon (daily) small animals: feed directly or add to food or water rats, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs: 3 drops per day, they usually like the flavor.. Mice: one drop per day" That's a really good vitamin, and hamsters usually eat it straight from the dropper. Though first I'd test how much 3 drops are and measure that onto the dropper, and feed my hammy directly from it. If he's not a big fan of it, I'd put 3 drops onto a bottlecap, and mix it with a little blob of yogurt to hide the flavor. I'd add an extra drop every other day. Your hammy MIGHT be ready to pass away, but it doesn't mean you shouldn't do anything! I'd give the yogurt every day separately from the vitamins if the hammy likes them. I'd also feed some treats (yogis are a favorite with hammies, a couple extra!) and plenty of corn and sunflower seeds and oats. I'd feed according to this chart for treats: http://www.hamsterific.com/hamsteruniversity/foodlist.html I'd feed some extras for the healthy stuff, maybe a little more meat. To prepare for him to let go, you have to accept that he's going to die. Anyway, it might be good he's going to die if he's suffering and there's nothing you can do about it! I'd add fresh bedding from his nest daily, sprinkling in a few old pieces. Clear out all stashed food. When you play with him tell him it's okay to leave, and that you'll meet him someday in Heaven. Hold him close in cupped hands, and while you read a novel maybe, give him treats and hold him on your belly on bare skin where it's warm, as he might also be getting arthritic. The warmth will soothe his achey little bones. Snuggle him more, keep his cage neater, and if there are tubes, you might want to keep them level, rather than them flying all over the place so he has less stress on his joints. Oil his wheel with some vaseline on the central wheel hold, so it moves smoothly, and so he doesn't have to work so hard. I'd get a solid plastic one if his is wire, so his feet don't hurt. After all, when he dies, it'll be even less stress for the next hamster. Take him outside to enjoy the grass, or onto your porch or something on warm days. Always let your family hold and cuddle him. Because he does seem to want to pass away. Remember, like dogs and birds, their life is limited, and they never brood about being terrified or angry about death, they always play and try to live their best. Just have a lot of fun with your hammy. Remember that if he does pass away, it's not like you'll never see him again, right?

Soccer Sport - A regular soccer game is 90 minutes long. Though friendly games might be shorter, it is still a great way to lose weight. Try to play it sincerely as you will have to do a lot of running, jogging and walking while playing soccer. Professional soccer players can burn between 500 and 800 calories in an hour. While you might not burn that much, it is definitely a great way to burn at least a couple of hundred calories. The game is also a very interesting game and most people fall in love with it once they give it a try.

please enjoy your last 3 to 4 weeks together PS you can get a new one i know how it fells to lose a pet.):

This happened with my guinea pig, take them to the vet and you will get green glop to feed them via a syringe. But if he is turning 3 then he is an old hamster, perhaps it is best to put him down instead of letting him starve really. My 2 year old guinea pig ended up being put down after I syringe fed every 4 hours for 2 weeks (every 4 hours on the dot...)

my hamster lost the same teeth once when he was 2yrs old... he was fine after a couple of weeks (no special diet or anything aside from the odd bits of carrot etc which he often got) 3 is a good age for him and they can go at anytime between 2 and 4 sadly. There is not really a way to prepare. Its so unexpected sometimes that they can be fine one night, dead the next. Sounds like he is at that age though, already his teeth and bones are a lot more brittle, so keeping close watch for breaks etc is important.. sadly though it does sound like he's getting VERY close to the light. However they can stay in a 'sleep all day' 'skinny' situation for several months before dying. Good luck and I hope you get a few more months of happyness with him
