If someone hacks your Facebook account, could police get involved?
-
My facebook has been hacked three times these past two weeks. I'm not going to actually call the police, because I don't really think it's that big of a deal. But hypothetically speaking, would police be able to do anything? Or do they not care and it's up to the owner of the account to make sure their account is safely guarded? And also, I don't think the hacker even wrote anything or messaged anyone, at least that's my friends said, so does that add to the police not caring? (like no harm no foul) Thanks

Answer:
Accessing someone else's Facebook account wihout permission is certainly illigal. The problem the police would have is finding out who did it, it's not hard to stay pretty much truely anonymous on the internet so they may never catch him. The "like no harm no foul" part is also reason to suspect that the police may not be particularly motivated to find who's responsible. Rather than the police maybe facebook should be the first people to contact since they should be able to see from what IP address the "hacker's" activities seemed to have originated from. You can also do some investigation yourself by going to Facebook account settings --> security settings and looking under activity. I know you didn't ask for security advice but if your account was hacked 3 times you have a security problem. Make sure you scan your computer for keyloggers with anti virus software, make sure your password cannot be easily guessed, make sure your security questions cannot be easily guessed (check these for the email address you registered with too) and don't log in over open wireless networks or on public computers.

Not usually, there is a jurisdiction problem to begin with. If the hacker is in one state, you are in another, and the servers are in a third state, do your local police have jurisdiction? If there is a large amount of financial damage the FBI could get involved, but they won't touch it for Facebook vandalism. There is just too much of this going on. The first thing you need to do is to make sure you have no malware on your computer, or sniffers in your network. Next, make sure your contact email on your profile is correct and then change your password to a strong password. That is 8 or more characters, upper and lower case, with numbers and non-alphanumeric characters. No dictionary words, addresses, birth dates, pets names, keyboard patterns, etc. Passw0rd! is not a strong password. Also don't write the password down. Don't respond to emails asking you to click on the link and login. Often these go to spoofed pages that look like the real one, but are actually just there to get your name and password.
The Police Could Get Involved But They May Not Want To Get InVolved. Thats Crazy If They Would Get Involved.
i know people hacked my friends page my friend doesnt know who got their password and police never got involved. he just made a new fb page.
you should consider changing your password or maybe even deleting your account and making a new one police probably would not get involved as no damage has been done, however you could try and report this to Facebook (not that they will do much)
