In Facebook, will a friend know that you've clicked on their name to chat, even without sending a message?

That sums it up. If I simply click on a friend's name in the 'Friends Online' list, will they even know I have done that if I don't try to send a chat message? I ask because I have one friend who appears to be online. However, if I click on his name, it INSTANTLY changes to say they are 'offline.' But as soon as I change pages or refresh, they are back online. This doesn't seem to happen with other friends, but it seems to happen too fast for him to be going offline and back on just to avoid me. I know you can create lists for chat that will make you appear offline to certain people - but I don't think he's doing that, since by default he appears online, and only offline if I click on him.

Well, I'm pretty sure they can't, but it's possible. I think that this would be easier if I knew if there was anything going on between you guys, but I think that you should ask him in a message. That way he could tell you himself. If he does not answer the message I would consider talking to him about it in person or on the phone (and I don't mean text).

NO they wont you have to send them a message in order for them to know that u clicked on their name!
no they do not know when you click on their name. your friend appearing offline suddenly is just a flaw on Facebook's part. happens to me all the time. even in the middle of a conversation
Its usually that people close the browser and facebook doesn't count it as offline. Once you click on their name, (they are seen as online) Facebook notices they aren't actually online and show them as offline. Then they could come back, and leave etc. Or it could be facebook stuffing up, as usual...
Don't message the person and ask them. IM is dodgy on all sites especially when you change pages etc. I have 2 accounts on facebook and when i log out of one and log into another the previous one shows me as still being online. If you message them and ask them if they are avoiding you then you're gonna look like an asshole.
You would have to say something to them to let that notify them so no not at all.
No there is no way they can find out, sometimes facebook IM can be screwed up because they will always make me offline even when i'm online so maybe it's just the IM itself.
