What is the best way to talk to friends on Windows Live Messenger through a Mac?

I have recently got a Macbook Pro, and I am trying to find a good programme that will allow me to talk to my friends that use Windows Live Messenger. The Microsoft Messenger application works fine, but it has some fairly annoying elements. It has trouble talking to anybody who has set there status to appear offline, it struggles with certain file transfers and doesn't allow many of the other more useful features as the Windows version of Windows Live Messenger. I've tried a few programmes like Nimbuzz but they seem to offer even less features than Microsoft Messenger. Are there any particularly good Mac replacements for Windows Live Messenger that you can recommend, or is it best to stick with Microsoft Messenger?
