How to fix up the Windows Media Player so that it can play YouTube videos ?

  • When I download a YouTube video on my HDD I play it with Real Player. If I want to play the same video on Windows Media Player I get this message; " Windows Media Player can not play this file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the Codec that was used to compress the file. " Is it possible to fix the Win. Med. Player so that it will play any YouTube video regadles of Codec ? If I can fix up the WMP I will remove the RealPlayer.

  • Answer:

If you are downloading and saving them as FLV file extensions then media player wont play them unless you get a codec pack (K-lite) However I would advise against this as I have had problems in the past with K-lite. The best thing to use is either Media Player Classic Home cinema or VLC Media player. They both support far more media extensions than the standard media player. With Media Player Classic Home cinema you do have to change the file associations manually through file properties.
