How to find the most viewed youtube videos?

How do I obtain permission for copyrighted material used in my YouTube videos? (And monetisation/partnering)?

  • I received an email from YouTube today inviting me to become part of their 'monetisation' scheme, where ads would be placed on my videos and I would be given some of the revenue generated by these. I am considering it, however a few of my most viewed videos have copyright notices on them. In some cases, the copyright has been claimed inaccurately (I upload myself singing, and have used backing tracks found on YouTube and, whilst the tracks may very well be under copyright, they have been claimed by the wrong company/organisation etc...) I have been worried about these copyright claims for years, as I have worked hard on my account and would be devastated if my videos were to get (justifiably) removed. I am wondering if it is possible to get permission to use certain backing tracks? I'm not entirely sure who they belong to, but if I find out do I simply write to whoever they belong to and ask for their permission? Do I have to pay for some sort of license? Even if I don't opt for the monetisation thing, I'd still like to be safe in the knowledge that my videos weren't copyrighted and liable for removal. Thank you for any help :) Also - is anyone part of this monetisation thing? Is it worth it? http://www.youtube.com/nadine2704

  • Answer:

If you have enough views in your youtube channel (ie. more than 20000) you will receive an email directly from youtube asking for "permission" to add the ads. Anyway, I have ads in my channel now but in order to earn money you need to expect the users to click on those ads and this is not frequent. I play piano on my videos, and my ads seem to be related to music, piano lessons, etc but even in that case, people just watch the videos. So this is not a big deal after all. I will earn $100 (the amount that triggers the check) in 10 or 20 years. My "poor" channel is: http://www.youtube.com/user/alfonsopablo

Even opting your account to be monetized doesn't make all your videos monetized, you have to manually monetize each video for submission. YouTube barely EVER take down a video if it doesn't get approved for monetization. So there's no risk involved in trying to monetize it, sadly you would most likely have to pay for permission which would be WAY to much to even bother, they would probably charge you like $5,000 or $10,000 if it's a big record company, (RECOMMENDED QUOTE) You can say upon submission: "This video was performed, produced and created by me and I received full permission to use the visuals and music placed in this video and under Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use." Try using that on some of your videos with music etc. on them. good luck. (It doesn't harm to lie every now and then, seems to work as well if you say you have permission by (record company name)
