Youtube username help?

Okay, so this is going to sound REALLY stupid, buuut, when I was trying to make a Youtube account I was asked to put in my email, but there was no place for a username. Is the email my username? How do I choose my username? I really don't want it to be what my username is. Thanks!

Answer:
That's because I think if you don't have a Gmail account it will take you there to make a Gmail (I'm not sure cuz I've had my channel for like forever). So you'll probably gonna have to make a Gmail. For me it's easier since I can seperate YouTube emails from my personal email. If I'm wrong, then just go ahead with it and enter your email. Good luck!
