How can i delete a gmail account from a g1 with out knowing the password?

my friend let me have his g1 mobile phone but i would like to delete his gmail account that link to his gmail in order for me to sync in my contacts; can someone please help me .

There is something missing here since I expect your friend would have disconnected the gmail link when the phone was gifted to you. Ask your friend to disconnect the gmail link since obtaining the password by any other means will be considered illegally breaking into their email account.
