What's so significant about Google Voice as an iPhone app?

How can I make a call from my iPhone only using WiFi from the Talktone or Google Voice App?

So talktone is like the Google Voice App, but supposedly the specific app allows you to make calls without AT&T as long as you are connected to WiFi. I tried it where I had WiFi but no actual AT&T Signal. WiFi call didn't connect.... what the hell is the point of WIFI call if it doesn't work without carrier service but only WiFi?? Any suggestions on how to make it work, other options, or similar apps that give WiFi call and unlimited minutes in the US at no charge?

Well there is an app called "Text Free With Voice". i used it on my iPod and it worked fine. the only bad thing about it is that you have to download free apps to get minutes, but don't worry you can delete them after you have collected your minutes. You can also connect to Facebook and IM (instant message) with people. although they call it texting you can IM with it. hope i helped :)
