How come this happens with my internet?

Internet access sometimes won't come up?

  • I've had my HP computer for 3 months. I have Charter internet and have a Motorola cable modem with 4 green lights and a amber light on the front. When I power on my computer, the amber PC/Activity light flashes along with solid green lights. When this happens, I know that I have internet access. But when I don't have the amber light on, I don't have internet access. So I have to unplug my modem (sometimes numerous times) to get the amber light to come on. I shouldn't have to unplug my modem to get connected to the internet, I should get it when I turn on my computer. Anyone had a similar problem like mine? Or help me come up with a solution. When I first set up my computer maybe I did something wrong.

  • Answer:

I have not had this specific problem but it seems like a Radio Frequency transmission problem more than a computer issue. If I have interpreted this correctly--> Green Lights means rate of Data Flow and the Amber Light means--> Connection established then something is amiss with the "Broadcasting" of the WiFi signal to your computer. Make certain all wired connections are firmly attached and if your router has an external antenna--ensure that it too is attached firmly and you may even have to rotate the antenna or router at a different angle to get the best signal to your computer. On the computer-->if it is a desktop check it's Wireless card antenna( you may have to open the computer case and reseat the card firmly in its slot) or if using a USB adapter try using a different port. Good Luck.
