Cancelling Windows Live/Hotmail Account...Need help?

I want to close my hotmail account, but when I try I get the following message: "Cannot close (the email I have) There is a Microsoft e-mail account (Windows Live Hotmail) associated with your account, so you can't close your Windows Live account immediately. To close your Windows Live account, you need to close your Microsoft e-mail account first. After a period of inactivity, your Windows Live account will automatically be closed." There is a link to close my Microsoft account. When I click it, there is another page saying "To close your Windows Live Hotmail account, you must first cancel your billing service. Go to Microsoft Account and Billing Services at https://billing.microsoft.com/." I clicked that last link but it says "no billing accounts" and I don't. I don't get billed for anything. I just want to close all of it down. I don't even use this email address anymore.

Is it a free account or paid account? If it's free, just stop using it. Don't log in. Eventually MS will purge your account.
