A question about ebay return.

Issued refund to buyer on ebay, but they want refund for return postage too?

  • I sold an item on ebay which I thought was new but turns out it was damaged, I of course would not have sold it had I known this, it was all wrapped in original packaging. Anyway I admit I am at fault for this for not checking it before putting it on ebay. The lady I sold the item to asked for a refund, she paid £5 for the curtains so I said I would refund her that and she could keep the curtains. She said she couldn't use them so I said she could send them back to me and I would refund her postage. She took this as refunding postage both ways and I meant the original postage she paid, which was £4.50. She sent them back to me recorded delivery at £9.72, more than the transaction cost originally. I explained I would only be refunding her £9.50, she opened a case against me on ebay stating she wanted a full refund (in ebay terms a full refund comprises of original item price and postage only, buyer takes responsibility for return postage). The case has now been closed by ebay as I have sent her the refund of £9.50, however she has now emailed me asking when she can expect the refund for the return postage. I know it is my fault in the first place but £9.72 for return postage is an awful lot to pay! I only sent the item for £3.90 originally. I even said I would refund £4.50 towards her postage costs but she refuses to accept this. My question is, do I have to pay this £9.72 back as well as the £9.50 I have already refunded? Thanks in advance.

Oddly, this same EXACT question was asked recently and I will respond the same way: the seller didn't specify both ways so the buyer is entitled to it and next time specify in the auction what you are willing to pay.

I think you should have to. All this back and forth originated on your end. You told her she could return them to you and that you would refund her postage. Now, since you find that the postage this buyer paid for is way too much, then ask her for a copy of her return postage receipt and pay what shows there. If it indeed is £9.72, then I think that you have to refund her that, and next time make clear under your listing's Refund Terms for returned items, that you will return postage as per your selected and instructed return postage (whichever other higher cost option is to the buyer's expense).
