How to detect compatibility mode in IE and actual version?

Old version of either FF or IE... Why am I so dumb?

I need an older version of either FF or IE. (Long story). Here are the issues I've been having. On the Microsoft website, I was able to download the install file for an old IE version, but when I tried to run it, it told me that it wouldn't work because I already had a newer version. So then, I tried to uninstall IE, to no avail... I then tried to find an older version of FF, but the FF website only had the newest version for download. Will someone help me please? Also, I'm using Vista btw :) Thanks! ^_^
