Where can you report email scams?

Who do you report email scams to?

  • I'd advertised for a room wanted on Craigslist and they sent me a convincing email asking me to house-sit for them. I didn't 'get' the scam at first but now they want my name and address so they can send me a check to pay off their security company. I'm not sure what happens next or how they get their money from the scam but I just wondered who do I report it to?? If there is anyone? I have their IP address and know they are in Lagos, Nigeria. PS I didn't give them my address!

They'll probably send you a check that's actually more than you need to pay the bill. They'll ask you to deposit the check and send them the difference. By the time their check bounces or is proven counterfeit they'll have taken your cash or cashed your check and you'll be on the hook for the value of the fake check. It almost happened to my roommate because he didn't know about the scam. As far as reporting it, don't even bother. No one will do anything. Just take pleasure in the fact that the scammer will probably live to be about 40 and then get murdered or die of AIDS or something.

If you know they are in Nigeria, report them to the EFCC http://www.efccnigeria.org/ who investigate financial and internet crimes in Nigeria. If you receive a check in the mail, turn it over to your nearest FBI Field Office with copies of all emails printed with full headers - they will work with law enforcement overseas.
