How do I password protect my Internet?

How can i password protect my wireless internet router?

  • i wanna stop my neighbours connecting to my internet how can i put a password on my router

  • Answer:

Each router has specific instructions - start by getting the make and model, then search for your physical manual - or look online for a manual. Basically, have a wired computer connected to the router (if you can.. otherwise wireless is the only choice) Point a browser at the router's address - usually something like 192.168.1.1 or 10.10.1.1 You may need to know the default password (again - check the manual) Then, assign both a "router management password" - to keep folks from changing your router settings; and a level of security "WEP" - about as helpful as a screen door, or "WPA2" .. stronger if you have it available. This will require a password, as well. Don't use the same passwords. You can, of course - write them down and tape them to the router. If you lose the password(s) - you will need to press the reset button on the router... so anyone who can touch the reset button can change the password anyhow. Leave the password there. Passwords should be different - if someone gets one, don't hand them the second. Mix UPPERCASE, lowercase, numbers and symbols ( 1,5,9,+ % @ - /spaces) Try to go for 15 characters minimum - and nothing like a name, address, title, phone number, etc.. patterns make the password a lot easier to break.

It's done by installing an encryption KEY in your router. Each router is a bit different, so you will need to read the instructions that came with your router. If you no longer have the instructions, you can download them from the router manufacturer's web site. You will need to come up with a KEY. Make it at least 20 characters and make it alpa numeric. In other word, it needs to have letters, numbers, ans symbols. To install the key you need to access the routers software. To do this you need to know the routers IP or web address. It will look something like 192.168.1.1. To find the actual IP, open Run and type: cmd and then hit enter. This will open the Command Prompt. At the Prompt, (little blinking arrow) type: ipconfig/all. The IP you are looking for is the one assigned to the DHCP server. Write this IP down. Now open your web browser and type the IP into the address bar and hit enter. Your routers software should now open. Now is when you need the manual. Once you have the encryption KEY installed you will need to also install this KEY onto each device that you want to be able to connect to "your" router. It's easy. Just click the internet icon in the system tray (lower right corner of the task bar). It should tell you that there are networks available. Click yours, and then click connect. You will now be asked for the KEY. Enter it and click connect or ok or what ever your computer says. You are now encrypted. No one can connect to your router's signal without knowing the KEY. By the way, if you had posted the router brand and model number I could have download the actual info on this and posted it here. But no matter, this is not a difficult procedure, and all personal WIFI signals should be encrypted. Once you have this done, your leaching neighbors will have to get there own internet connection.

Every router is different, but you will need to access the admin page to your router. For linksys routers, open a web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1 . From there, you'll need to sign in to the admin site of the router. Enter "admin" as the username and nothing as the password (unless these credentials have been changed during the initial setup). Once you're signed in, you will be able to set a password on your wireless router to secure your network.
