How does Amazon marketplace shipping work (for sellers)?

  • Ok, I sold a book through Amazon under one of the already existent listings. I'm just confused how shipping costs work? Does Amazon give me money to ship the book out, do they give me credit or do I have to pay for shipping myself? On the packaging slip I printed out it says standard shipping costs $3.99 but I haven't even shipped out the item because it's the "day after new years" and stores are closed. Do I just go to USPS and have them just ship the book out or something? I don't know if I'm making this overly complicated or not but shipping with Amazon doesn't make sense.

    You are responsible for shipping the item yourself. You can do that in whatever way you choose (USPS, UPS, etc). The way it works is that Amazon automatically attaches a shipping/handling cost to the book ($3.99 is standard I think). Then you say how much you want for it. The purchaser pays your price and the shipping cost at checkout. Amazon takes their cut (which isn't much) and then sends you the rest (including the shipping fee). Basically the shipping is part of the price of the book. Amazon just simplifies it by attaching a standard shipping cost to each book instead of letting the seller specify. In most cases, if you already have a box and use standard USPS shipping, it will cost less than 3.99 to ship and you come out a little ahead. Hope that helps.

Regarding how you ship the book, Amazon will only reimburse you $3.99. You can print the shipping label via your Amazon seller's account online, or you can take your book to USPS and ship it. However, make sure you have a tracking number because Amazon is really sensitive about this. If you don't provide a tracking number, it is going to effect your seller's performance. The lowest cost to send a book that can fit in the flat rate envelope is $4.75 (online postage rate) with tracking number.
