Internet explorer - keeps crashing, multiple issues?
-
I used to have IE version 6.0. It started to crash. Alot. If I would try to go to a site I had searched, it would instead open up a page-length advertisement unrelated to the site I wanted to visit. Then if I tried to go back, it would crash. Before this, Internet explorer would crash, OR, I'd shut it down myself, and a message would pop up that IE had to close, did I want to send a report (this would happen, even though I shut it down myself). I did many things - got the newest version of McAfee, which includes a spyware program. I did an entire scan after "cleaning" the computer as it recommeded. It found absolutely nothing. No viruses. I downloaded Internet Explorer 7.0 - still the same problem. I try to search, and it redirects me to an ad, then shuts down. I can type in addresses in the address bar, and it may get me there better. But the problems still exist. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and I really don't want to try firefox!! I've been an IE user for years. McAfee customer service did say they could try to help me find a virus manually, but I don't want to screw around with my computer and have them tell me to do something and not warn me, like erase my hard drive (believe it or not, DELL once almost had me do this, and didn't tell me). Should I go to the IE microsoft site to run a scan from there? I did get a panel that looked like is was from Microsoft tellign me I was infected - but then it had a dotcom address at the top, so it made me think it was an ad. When I ran McAfee, it found nothing.

You may not want to try Firefox, but I recommend you do. It's much more stable and secure. And it's not that different than Internet Explorer. It has the same features. I've tried using IE, and every time I have failed. It's not even worth messing with it. Try Firefox. http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
I recommend AVG to scan your computer for viruses and spywares. http://www.borekiller.com/
You can download several different spyware/adware programs and check your system for that - but I would also encourage you to run a system file check - if you have your operating system cd available, open up a command prompt and type this in sfc /scannow.... I assure you that this will not harm your computer... Google sfc and you'll see. P.S. - I've had McAfee for many years - it's not crap - a little bloated perhaps, but it does its job...
