Is the pirate bay illegal?

The Pirate Bay and piracy and illegal stuff?

  • Well, i used to own every CD by this one band and I gave the CD's away but now I want to listen to them again and I'm just thinking I should download their entire discography from The Pirate Bay. But then I thought> if it is illegal to download material that you did not purchase, what if you are downloading something that you DID purchase before? I mean, I know that the people that would get you in trouble for downloading copyrighted material wouldn't know that you had previously purchased the same stuff that you later illegally downloaded. Just a thought, even though you are downloading copyrighted material, you still did buy the music in CD form earlier. So if the people that would take you to court over this knew that you legally purchased it earlier(and had proof) and then later illegally downloaded it, would that cancel it out? It's like buying a CD, losing the CD, and then downloading it so you have it again. Am I the only one who has thought about this? **back to the "me downloading discography of band from the pirate bay">> i have like one single from the band left in my possession. I would rather have the CD's because I like to have a physical copy of music, but I'm too embarrassed to buy the CD's of this particular band (i swear i went through an odd middle school phase and most of the music i listened to was in VERY bad taste but some music((the band i speak of)) just holds the nostalgia which i cannot resist) So if I must say the name of this band, or type, rather, I do it with much regret as I myself feel like a complete loser in doing so.... The band I speak of is H.I.M... I know, I know. Don't make me feel any more worse than I do for having listened to them throughout middle school. SO> under these circumstances> me wanting entire discography back>deciding to download it illegally- off the pirate bay- even though i technically bought it before in CD form>and i do not want to have to go into public and be seen purchasing a physical copy of their music>in fact i don't want to have to buy anything again>i already bought it all before> thoughts other than tl;dr?

  • Answer:

if you bought you would not need to download it if you lost it you need to buy it again

Even if that sounds reasonable it doesn't work that way. Which is why their are special licenses given to companies like iTunes and Amazon where you download songs you bought again. But in case of physical media [CD's] The licenses don't carry, unless they let you "register" the CD online so you can download the songs again. In court what you would be doing is like, you bought one cd, lost it, so you go back to the store and steal another CD. Its better to get all your songs off of iTunes or Amazon music store instead of buying physical media, if you want to be on the safe side of the line.
