Can you recover a emails in a deleted account?

If I had an email account with a domain that no longer exists or if the account has been locked/deleted is there any way to recover emails sent to it or have them forwarded elsewhere? A game account I have was registered a long time ago to an email account on a domain that was shut down and now I can not access the game account without confirming the email. Am I S.o.L?
