What can you tell from someone's IP address?

  • Someone on a message board keeps trolling and taunting people, and he's flaunting the fact he has my IP address. What exactly can one tell from an IP address? The Internet at my apartment is registered under my roommate's name, so I'm not too worried if it gives info on the account holder because it's not me. But I don't want someone to have access to things on my computer or be able to see what I'm looking at or doing. Can you do this by just having a person's IP? Just trying to see if this guy is something I should worry about.

    If someone has your IP address they can scan you with tools such as Nessus to identify vulnerabilities and attempt to penetrate your computer/network. A basic router provides some protection as do software firewalls (software firewalls are included on the latest copies of Windows and Mac). If you want to have serious protection look in to m0n0wall or pfSense. Your web browser can actually give away a lot of information about you so don't visit links on the message board you describe. Check a website like browserabout.com to see what information your browser is giving up so you know what to expect.

Not much personal can be gleaned from just an IP address (actually, it belongs to your Internet Service Provider (ISP), but they assign it to you). But if you're not protected, someone who knew how could use your IP address to hack into your machine. I suggest you put up a firewall. Windows XP, Vista and 7 all come with one, and you can download several free ones that offer more flexibility. If you're using a router, a firewall isn't absolutely necessary, but I still recommend one. Hope that helps.
