Why can't I connect to the Internet yet my Laptop says 'connected'?!?
-
Hi there! I received a new laptop as a Christmas present (Sony Vaio). I managed to connect to my parents Internet provider whilst staying with them over Christmas. I had no issues whatsoever. As soon as I typed in their password, I was connected. They are with Virgin Media or BT I think. However when I got back to my own flat, and tried to connect to the Internet via Sky broadband, I was unable to connect. Yet when I checked my connection etc, my laptop showed that I was connected and my signal strength was 'excellent'. But I kept receiving the error page. I re-set my router, and restarted the laptop but still the same issues. I tried to connect to the internet on my old laptop, just in case there was an issue with my internet provider, but that connected absolutely fine!!? When I clicked on the 'diagnose problems', it mentioned something about not being able to recognise a device - I didn't understand the rest? Can anyone help? I would bring the laptop back, but I was able to connect to the internet at my parents house, and I also know its not my internet provider as I was able to connect back at my own home on another laptop? Many thanks

Answer:
hiya i had the same problem with a laptop at school try disconnecting and reconnecting your internet or if that doesn't work turn off the internet broadband and turn it on again and reconnect,if even that doesn't work you'll have to try and find out another problem like if your laptop cant pick up your internet providers signals.if its that then reset local internet connection setup. good luck!! ;-)

Try right clicking on the little internet icon at the bottom of your screen and click on diagnose.
ok very simple, open your old laptop's connection properties.either hit autoconfigure on your new laptop under connection, or change the settings to match your old laptop, like encryption etc. thatll do it.
i quick tip when it says conected it means to your network not the internet the problem lies within your networks conection to the internet so from the router to the modem
Did you make sure to manually disconnect from your parents and reconnect to yours?
check your browser isn't set to work offline. often an option in the file menu. other than that no idea. i would try checking it still works on another conection, and then check if anyone else can connect via your router.
