How to detect compatibility mode in IE and actual version?

IE, Firefox & Chrome work in safe mode, but not normal mode?

  • I have two laptops. The full-size model is XP Professional and started doing this 3 days ago. The other laptop is a Netbook with XP Home. In normal mode, IE will find the site, but never load it. Chrome just gives the SNAP error message, and Firefox will let you browse for 2 to 5 minutes then either shuts itself down or just sits with the hour glass not going anywhere. Logging in in safe mode with network support, all browsers work as they should. I have run AVG and Ad-Aware. I have also run msconfig and disabled all services and start-up with the exception of MS products. I have NOT installed any software on either laptop in awhile...3 months for the full-size and about 7 months for the Netbook. I primarily frequent Facebook, a forum that I own (where no banner ads are allowed), a few blogs and that is about it. I use the iGoogle homepage, and have for quite a while. My email client still works just fine. I can get DNS resolution, ping and traceroute through the command prompt. I have no problems running any other software. Firefox loads a LOT quicker in safe mode also...10 seconds versus 30+ seconds in normal mode. I am thinking that this must be a virus of some kind, but do not know how I got it.
