How to find the right publicist to promote my book...?

  • I just wrote my first book and am editing now-I am self publishing because I know how hard it can be to get publishing companies to look at new authors-the company I'm going through is AuthorHouse, but I want to look at publicists to help with getting my book out there-I am a little overwhelmed right now and intimidated by the idea of marketing my own book. How do I find the right publicist for me and how much does it usually cost-I'm sure the cost varies, but if you can give me a rough estimate, I'd appreciate it. I just started doing some research online and any guidance would help me sooo much:) Thank you!!!

    First of all do not go through authorhouse. They have more complaints then compliments. I almost went through them and it was just too much, and they cost a lot of money as well. I struggled so much in the publishing process that I started my own company and we help authors publish their books for free. Having that said I hired my own publicist and the company is really good and we have partnered with them. They cost (depending on how much you want to do) between 5k and 30k. Hi there, In my experience i've found self publishing to be pretty profitable but that's because i have written quite a few books so far. If this is your first book then your chances of getting a book deal are, sadly, quite small i'm sorry to say. You really need to go to them with a track record these days. Think about how the music industry recruits 'new' talent - they go on myspace and find the pretty people with lots of registered fans ;-) You shouldn't have to pay anyone at any point to get a book out there - if you are being charged then you are being taken advantage of.
