How to do research on a company?

How do I research a company?

  • I want to apply for a job with a company I never heard of. I would like to do some research on them, but their website doesn't give much. I would like to know more about them. For example, if they had any bad press, what benefits they give, maternity leave, bonuses, annual increases, average salaries. Also, is there a web site where I can compare similar companies?

  • Answer:

Yahoo. The Yahoo Finance section is incredible. It is amazing how much you can learn about a company, its competitors, its management, and products/services. Back in the day, you would have had to pay $$ or pour through Moodys or the Wall Street Journals, or S&P reports. In an hour you can find out an amazing amount of info about any public company. Private - that takes longer. Try their company web site or use the search feature to see what bloggers are saying about the company (type company + a derogative term and see what you get).

I don't know about a website, but I think the best way would be to either call or set up an appointment. It's a bit easier to just go to the source and ask your questions.
